PSS Builds and Tests 75 Feet Offshore Fire Pump

PSS Group has successfully conducted a comprehensive performance test for a 75-foot offshore vertical fire pump, ensuring its reliability and efficiency in demanding marine environments. This test is part of our commitment to delivering high-performance rotating equipment solutions tailored to offshore applications.
Performance Test Overview
The test was initially conducted on a 15-foot setup to evaluate key parameters such as flow rate, discharge pressure, and power consumption. To accurately predict full-length performance, PSS utilized an advanced extrapolation methodology that accounts for:
- Static Lift Adjustment – The offshore pump requires an additional 60 feet of vertical lift, which reduces discharge pressure.
- Friction Loss Analysis – Using the Darcy-Weisbach equation, we calculated the friction losses along the 8-inch Superduplex pump column, ensuring accurate pressure drop estimations.
- Total Dynamic Head (TDH) Scaling – By incorporating both vertical lift and frictional losses, we projected realistic offshore operating conditions.
- Power Consumption Estimation – Adjustments were made based on head variation to optimize energy efficiency.
- NPSHa Considerations – The offshore setup benefits from higher submergence (32 feet vs. 13 feet in the test), improving suction conditions and minimizing cavitation risks.
PSS Engineered Drop-In Pump
This fire pump is a PSS Engineered drop-in pump, designed to meet NFPA 20 standards. The entire pump was upgraded to Super Duplex material, ensuring enhanced durability, corrosion resistance, and superior performance in offshore environments.
Results and Key Takesways
The comprehensive analysis confirmed that the offshore pump would operate efficiently under real-world conditions, maintaining reliable flow rates while compensating for additional lift and pipeline losses. Also the pump fulfills all requirements to NFPA 20.
Why This Matters
Offshore fire pumps are critical for ensuring fire safety and asset protection in marine and oil & gas environments. By leveraging precise performance extrapolation techniques, PSS Group provides confidence in equipment reliability before offshore deployment.
